Preschool News

From Judy Bayley

Wow! It is the first few weeks of Sunday school and we are teaching these very young children one of the most important and basic truths of a Christian worldview—God made everything in the world and called it good. Right now our children accept this as truth just because those who care for them tell them.

We know that as they grow and develop, our children will eventually be exposed to some very different ideas about the origins of the universe. Let's pray for our children this week that the Holy Spirit will so fill their minds and hearts with this truth that when the point of questioning comes they will never take the leap of faith to believe that what we perceive with our senses is all that there is.

As you explore our world with your preschooler, be sure to point out how smart God must be to have made all this. God must love beauty. God never made anything boring. He made so many kinds of birds, flowers and fish. We learn some things about God from looking at what he made!

OUR CLASS

When the children arrive from the service we spend about twenty minutes in free choice center activities. Many of these are related to the lesson for the day. Centers might include blocks, books, puppets, paint, play dough, pretend, drawing, or sand. Then we gather on the rug for finger play, songs, story and perhaps a game. Today our games explore the different ways that animals move and the different sounds that they make. How boring our world would be if all the animals made the same sound! We will thank God for animals and the joy they bring to us! We finish with a snack and sometimes a simple craft.

Alpha

We had a great kick-off dinner celebration for the Alpha course this week. This coming Tuesday we begin digging in to questions about life and faith. The registration is not closed--so you can still join and bring a friend if you come this week. Alpha is held Tuesday evenings at 6:30 at the home of Ricki Rosengren, 1233 Ridge Road in Wilmette. Call the office for more details or if you have questions, or email co-leaders Jill Roekeman or Ricki Rosengren.

COR@9

This Sunday morning is the last week of "God's Heart for Children" with Dr. Susan Greener. This has been an excellent time to press into issues that are both global and very local. One feature this week is a tool to help evaluate our own approach to ministry with children at Church of the Redeemer.

Starting the first Sunday in October we'll hear from Dr. Graham Cole teaching on the great ideas of the Reformation.

The Redeemer Picnic

We have re-scheduled our picnic for Sunday, October 5th. Please let our office know that you will attend. redeemer@redeemernorthshore.org

Tasting Reconciliation, a Cup at a Time

This Sunday we will re-launch our coffee ministry partnership with Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Company, a group that links growers in Rwanda with churches here in the US. We're finding that coffee is a great way to reach out to people beyond our church, and it is something that expresses, in practical terms, our relationship with Rwanda. Plan to hear more from Michele Becker this week.

Academy Award Winning Film: As We Forgive

Church of the Redeemer will have a rare opportunity on October 22 to screen a special film on Rwanda's work toward reconciliation. "As We Forgive" was produced and directed by Laura Waters Hinson, an AMiA worship leader who is completing graduate work in film. She won a Gold Medal in the student division of the Academy Awards, and this film is now getting a lot of 'buzz'. Tickets are available now for you to invite friends, co-workers, etc to view the film and hear first-hand from the film maker, to be shown at the Wilmette theatre. Call the church office or look for Brocki following the service at the welcome table. Tickets are $10 and are in limited supply.

Stewardship at Church of the Redeemer

As we move into fall, we also transition into the time of the year where we seek to make up any budget shortfall. In August, we're grateful for the response that allowed us to meet and even slightly exceed our budgeted income amount, but for most of the year we have been running behind. Even as the economy is in difficult times, we trust God for His provision, and pray that what is needed will be provided as we pray and respond as we are able. You'll be hearing more about this in coming weeks, but please pray for the needs in our congregation, and also the finances that make possible our ministries through Church of the Redeemer.

Average offering needed each week: $6900
Offering last Sunday: $8,970

Please pray for . . .

  • The mission and vision of Church of the Redeemer
  • God's provision and will in these days
  • Our Redeemer staff, on retreat Friday (today)
  • Those in need in body, mind and spirit
  • The new ministries and opportunities emerging at Church of the Redeemer
