Fall is a great time in the Chicagoland area. The evenings are getting 'brisk', the leaves are turning wonderful colours and this year, it's still baseball season! It's also a great time to celebrate our community at Church of the Redeemer and the various opportunities for worship, connection and outreach. Please take a moment to read this weekly update, and forward to a friend who may be looking for a place to know God and his people as we journey together.

Church Picnic

Plan on staying after the worship service this Sunday to share a meal and some relaxing time together. Just look for the big white tent that will be set up behind the church. Bring lawn chairs and/or blankets, and side dishes to share. Church of the Redeemer will provide the main dish, so please let us know you're coming. Here are a few more details:

As a reminder, the potluck portion of the picnic will be divided up by last name as follows: A-F bring Salad for 8, G-L bring Side-dish for 8, M-Z bring Dessert for 8 (College/Graduate students are welcome to bring a dish for 4). Be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chairs on which to sit, as well as your own dishware and eating utensils. Come for great food, great company, face-painting, and even some games for our children!

To RSVP or with questions, contact the church office at (847) 681-2872 or redeemer@redeemernorthshore.org.

COR@9

On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came on the people at 9 o'clock in the morning, so it's not a bad time to gather for inspiration and growth on Sundays, either. This month we begin a new series with Dr. Graham Cole, Professor of Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and part of our congregation at Church of the Redeemer. Here's what Graham says about his course:

Over four Sundays in October we shall look at four ideas that changed the world in which we live and their relevance today. The big ideas are Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone and Bible Alone. Classical Anglicanism embodies these four ideas in the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion. The little word 'alone' was the controversial point in the 16th century and still is. If the Reformers of the 16th century got the Bible's interpretation right then God offers us a real salvation through Christ and not merely puts us on probation. This is good news indeed!

Redeemer Kids Update

Our older Sunday School class (K-4th grade) will be working on a timeline of Jesus' life. This month we'll cover his teenage visit to the Jerusalem temple, his baptism and the calling of the disciples. We'll try to understand these major events in relation to our personal call to follow Jesus. The children will also have an opportunity to interact with some new volunteers and get to broaden their relationships in the church family.

Welcome Lunch

Sunday October 19th is our next welcome lunch (it's been awhile since the last one). If you're not sure if you should attend, then you probably should. Did you start attending Church of the Redeemer in the last year and have not been to the previous welcome lunch? Then you should definitely plan on joining us following the coffee hour. You'll meet others who are still 'settling' in, and you'll hear briefly about our mission and identity. If you have brought people to Redeemer and are a long-time part of our community, then plan on coming, as well, with the people you have invited.

Unique Film Opportunity: As We Forgive

Church of the Redeemer will have a rare opportunity on October 22 to screen a special film on Rwanda's work toward reconciliation. "As We Forgive" was produced and directed by Laura Waters Hinson, an AMiA worship leader who is completing graduate work in film. She won a Gold Medal in the student division of the Academy Awards, and this film is now getting a lot of 'buzz', having just been signed up to tour with National Geographic. Tickets are available now for you to invite friends, co-workers, etc to view the film and hear first-hand from the film maker, to be shown at the Wilmette theatre. Call the church office or look for Brocki following the service at the welcome table. We only have 150 tickets for this event, so pick up your tickets as soon as possible.

Stewardship at Church of the Redeemer

As we move into fall, we also transition into the time of the year where we seek to make up any budget shortfall. In August, we're grateful for the response that allowed us to meet and even slightly exceed our budgeted income amount, but for most of the year we have been running behind. Even as the economy is in difficult times, we trust God for His provision, and pray that what is needed will be provided as we pray and respond as we are able. You'll be hearing more about this in coming weeks, but please pray for the needs in our congregation, and also the finances that make possible our ministries through Church of the Redeemer.

Average offering needed each week: $6900
Offering last Sunday: $3,140

Please pray for . . .

  • The mission and vision of Church of the Redeemer
  • God's provision and will in these days
  • Our Redeemer staff
  • Nancy Mitchell, for comfort in the death of her mother
  • Those in need in body, mind and spirit
  • The new ministries and opportunities emerging at Church of the Redeemer
