Living with Open Hands

Open HandsLately I've been offering some reflections, biblically and spiritually, on our response to the financial situation that has now spread across the world. This includes a reflection in a similar email a couple of weeks ago and the sermon on Sunday. To recap, the scriptures hold up the reality of God's ownership of and sovereignty over all things, and that we can trust him. That trust leads us to live our lives as stewards in ways that are open and generous, even when others are losing their heads. No doubt we will be presented with many opportunities to trust God and serve others in ways we have not yet known.

I want to expand on one of these observations. Over the last few weeks a number of news stories have appeared reporting that although most sales are in decline, beer and wine are on the rise. It is also expected that those who work in the sex trade will see more business in the coming days, and certain types of crime are also on the increase. These data represent cries for help from those experiencing greater stress, tension and loss of control in their lives, and we see this kind of response, historically, in tough times.

This situation is also a reminder of our place as God's people, and our opportunities to serve, love and call others (and ourselves) to new life. Church of the Redeemer is a place where people can encounter God, know the love of his children and find hope. It is a unique congregation on the North Shore, I believe, that offers an authentic and vulnerable gift of 'presence'—the kind of presence that so many need right now.

You may remember that after the events of 9/11 church attendance in this country surged. People had been shaken into an openness to look behind their previously mundane and predictable routines for deeper and greater Truth. Churches added extra services, reminded people of God's sovereignty and called people to repentance and faith. I remember that in the church I was serving at the time 2002 was our greatest year of growth and ministry.

For us at Church of the Redeemer we have similar opportunities before us. Many of our neighbors and co-workers are open to spiritual insight and truth in ways that they weren't before. They are facing their own finitude, which is where the search for God usually begins. You and I may be the lifelines that can offer a listening ear, some time, and the gifts that God has placed among us. This means that we must continue to press in to the Lord and to Christian community, look for ways to meet the various needs around us, and risk—in love—the things we might be tempted to hold and protect, such as our time and money. This will cost us something, but no more than we were given in order to give away.

It is a joy to be on the journey with you. I marvel at what God is doing among us, in opening us up, enlivening our community and drawing us closer to himself. As I marked my second anniversary as Rector last Sunday I gave thanks for you and for all that has taken place in our life as a congregation in a relatively short time. This is no accident, but is God's gift, to be celebrated and shared, for such a time as this.

In Peace,

Jay

COR@9

Dr. Graham Cole has begun an outstanding series of four classes on great ideas from the Reformation. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the Church's leading theologians and fellow servants. Join us this Sunday at 9am for session 2 on sola fide— faith alone.

Welcome Lunch

Are you new, or relatively new, to Church of the Redeemer? Interested in learning more about the church, and how you can make connections? Plan on being a part of our welcome lunch, Sunday October 19th, right after coffee hour. We'll handle the details—just come and enjoy. Contact our office with any questions.

As We Forgive

One of our key outreach opportunities this fall is a special screening of a new film on Rwanda, telling the story of forgiveness through the lives of two women who survived the genocide. It has already won several awards and has recently been tapped by National Geographic for its film tour. This professional film includes footage of Sonrise School, interviews with Bishop Rucyahana, and a clear message of Christian forgiveness. The filmmaker, Laura Waters Hinson, will be available for Q and A after the screening.

While it is not violent, its theme makes it unsuitable for young children. Call or email the office for tickets, or get them on Sunday. The film will be shown Wednesday, October 22nd, at 7:30pm at the Wilmette Theatre, downtown Wilmette.

View the film's trailer.

Giving at Church of the Redeemer

A mark of the redeemed life is a person who gives—openly, generously and with joy. On Sunday you heard Steve Yukel, our Treasurer, outline the giving needs for the final quarter of 2008. Our goal of $150,000 over the next three months is a large mountain for us, and it is similar to the needs we have faced in the last several years. And although we met the goal last year, we can't be complacent about this need. But God, through us, is able. Please pray, and seek God's provision, then give as he directs. Prayer is foundational to all that we engage in, as we seek God's will and trust in him.

Average offering needed each week: $6900
Offering last Sunday: $1,563

Special Guest Preacher

Come this Sunday ready to hear what God is doing at the point of greatest need, particularly in Chicago. Pastor Phil Jackson reaches thousands of young people in one of the hardest neighborhoods in the city—Lawndale. His current outreach is the establishing of a community arts center to transform the lives of kids, through the love of Christ and the teaching of marketable skills. Father Jay served briefly on the board of this art center before joining Redeemer as Rector and is encouraging us to receive Pastor Phil with open and expectant hearts.

Watch Channel 7's recent feature on the art center.

Picnic

Thanks to all who assisted with our church picnic last Sunday. We experienced a great time of sharing and getting to know some new friends. The turnout was very good, and the rain held off until after the event.

Please pray for . . .
