When the Bishops Came to the Northshore

Last Sunday was a glorious celebration of worship as a full church lifted up voices in song, prayer and praise. Archbishop Kolini brought a 25 minute challenge to us during the COR@9 setting, which was moved upstairs to accommodate the numbers. Also present was our Bishop, Sandy Greene, who has not been able to be with us since Fr. Jay was installed as Rector in October of 2006. Bishop Sandy greeted the people and shared his own sermon to encourage Redeemer in its mission. "I was very grateful for the Bishop's confidence and his affirming words," offered the Rev. Jay Greener, Redeemer's Rector. "Of course, what is happening here is God's doing and the work of our staff and other leadership, as well. I'm not sure folks new to our Anglican family can appreciate the significance of welcoming a visiting Primate of the Church, as well as our Bishop. These are men of faith and courage who link us to the apostolic ministry of the early church and to the vitality and growth in the Global South."

Archbishop Kolini said that he is praying for us, that our mission might grow and that we will need to add more worship services. We were also pleased to welcome the Archbishop's wife, Freda, as they stopped in Chicago before their trip home to Rwanda on Monday. Let us pray for them, especially as Archbishop Kolini meets with other GAFCON Primates soon to consider next steps for renewal of the church around the world, and here in the United States.

Church of the Redeemer is part of the Anglican Mission in the Americas, a missionary outreach of the Anglican Church of Rwanda.

COR@9—Discover Redeemer

This week our 9am sessions transition to an important opportunity for those new to Redeemer. The Discover Redeemer course is a four-week series that offers our story as a church, shares our vision and mission, and provides teaching on our beliefs. It's a great way to engage with the heart of Redeemer, and to ask questions that may be on your mind. We'll have the coffee on, as well as some treats from Deerfield Bakery. It all begins this Sunday at 9am in the Fellowship Hall.

This Saturday

We have a couple of special items on the calendar this Saturday.

Leaders Gathering
From 9-10:30am our leaders will gather at the Evangelical Church in Highland Park. If you are leading a ministry, on staff or the Vestry this time is for you. A light breakfast is provided.

Celebration of Life—Leah, Eliana and Kate
From 11am-1pm women of the church are invited to honour the birth of new children and their mothers, especially Leah Burns, Eliana Richards and Kate Miller. This Celebration of Life will be hosted at Liz Hupp's home, 497 Eden's Lane in Northfield. Please RSVP liz [at] hupp.com, or contact her with any questions.

Call for Readers

Any who would like the opportunity to be added to the list of people who read the Scriptures at the Sunday service should email Bob Decker at robtdecker [at] comcast.net. Anyone who thought they were on the list, but who have not been contacted by Bob to read should also send Bob a quick email. He may not have an updated email address for you.

Youth Announcements

Parent Meeting — We are having a parents meeting ten minutes after coffee hour on Nov. 16th. This will be an opportunity to dream a little bit, walk through some calendar issues and dream about the spring.

Date Day — On Friday Nov. 21st we are having a time for younger families in the congregation to drop their kids off for a couple hours on Friday November 21st so that the younger couples can go on a date! The youth group will be providing care for the children with adult supervision.

Reaching Out

Church of the Redeemer will sponsor a coat, (also winter cap, scarf, glove/mitten) drive for the clothing closet operated by Love INC (in the name of Christ), a Christian ministry whose mission is to mobilize the Church to transform the lives of communities and individuals in the name of Christ. The coat drive will begin on November 16, 2008 and continue through the last Sunday of Advent. Please consider donating "gently used" items (for example, no broken zippers, unrepaired tears, or noticeable stains). Items most needed are large-size women's coats and children's and men's coats of all sizes, though all donations will be accepted and appreciated.

Danielle Miller and Dan Babarik will be points of contact for the coat, winter cap, scarf, glove/mitten drive. Items may be placed in the foyer prior to or after services on upcoming Sundays or you may make arrangements to give the items to Danielle or Dan. Feel free to contact Danielle or Dan.

Building Community

Be devoted to one another... Honor one another above yourselves... Pray for one another... Accept one another, just as Christ accepted you... Bear with each other... Teach and admonish one another... Encourage one another... Be kind and compassionate with one another... Love one another deeply, from the heart...

Reading through the numerous "one another" commands in the Epistles, it's clear that God calls us not only to Himself, but to each other. At Redeemer, small groups are one way we seek to grow more like Christ by living out these "one another" commands. They help us move out of the modern emphasis on individuality that permeates much of our lives and thinking, and toward the Biblical model of living in community. Small groups are meant to foster love, acceptance, forgiveness — and the challenge to grow.

New small groups are now forming around the region. Resources

Our recent guest and preacher, the Rev. Dr. Richard Turnbull of Oxford University's Wycliffe hall, wrote that he loved being at Redeemer and invites people to visit the seminary if they ever find themselves in Oxford. He regrets that he did not have enough copies of his book for all who wanted it, but directs them to Amazon.com

Coming Up . . .

— Church of the Redeemer will have a Thanksgiving Day service at 10am at Redeemer Lutheran Church. This informal communion service will provide an opportunity for us to give thanks to God in advance of our family meals together.

— We will be making the church ready for Advent on Saturday evening, November 29th at 6pm. This was a more involved event last year, but since it is Thanksgiving weekend and families are traveling, it will be more modest. Gather at the church to help change colours, decorate, etc and offer some prayer for the Advent season in this Hanging of the Greens event. Then we'll head to Starbucks.

— On December 7th at 6pm Church of the Redeemer will offer to the community a Festival of Advent Lessons and Carols. This traditional service will feature readings that promise the coming of the Messiah, and music that responds to each reading. The music will vary, utilizing our worship team, choral group and congregational singing of worship songs and hymns. One special feature of the evening is that we will be using the pipe organ that has been silent for too long.

There is actually a video of this organ on YouTube. Check it out.
