Feeding the Need
While driving in the car Friday night returning from our trip to Breakthrough Ministries in the city, one of the students asked, "Ryan, how do you answer the question — 'Why are some people born in a more privileged position than others?'" And what proceeded for the next twenty minutes was a conversation about the unjust nature of our society.
Friday night about eight of us went to the women's shelter at Breakthrough to serve dinner, lead a devotion and get to know some of the women who are at various stages on the healing journey. Katelyn Dembski and Danielle Dewitt researched and visited Breakthrough a few weeks ago in their desire to serve others. Friday Night was the fulfillment of that desire to serve as we fed 40 women in various stages of the healing journey.
I personally love to see students serve in settings like this precisely because of the conversations and dreaming possibilities that come from it. In the car Friday night, when this absolutely huge question was asked, everyone was zeroed in on the discussion and at the end of the conversation desired to participate with God in how he is redeeming our world. Not only does serving benefit those being served but those doing the serving.

Grill and Chill
Join us for our annual Church Picnic, in the meadow behind Redeemer Lutheran after the morning service this Sunday, August 16th. The potluck portion of the picnic will be divided up by last name as follows: A-H Salad for 8, I-P Side-dish for 8, Q-Z Dessert for 8 (college/graduate students may bring a dish for 4).
This year, we'll be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, so please RSVP. Call the church office at (847) 681-2872 or redeemer [at] redeemernorthshore.org. Be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chairs on which to sit.
A picnic is a great way to include people who may not attend church regularly in a Redeemer event, so make sure to invite your friends and neighbors!
Join in. Invite others. Feast!

Back to School
Our church has many students and teachers, all eager for school to begin again. At any rate, school is just around the corner and we want to bless those whose lives are connected with learning, in its many facets. Sunday August 30th will be "Backpack Sunday" at Redeemer, as a time of consecrating and blessing those who study and those who teach, from pre-school through adult education. Bring your backpack (or whatever represents that learning enterprise for you) and we'll bless them and you as school begins. You may want to invite other students and teachers who don't have a church home to participate, so that they can also feel supported in their important work.

COR@9
Beginning September 6th our whole community will have opportunity to grow together in an extended study of the Life of Jesus, as we encounter him in the Gospel of Matthew. Dana Harris will lead a team of teachers as we walk through this fascinating story each week at 9am. The class begins in September and will run through the school year and represents a significant discipleship opportunity at Redeemer.
Invite a friend and plan to walk with us. Child-care and activities for children will be provided during that time.

Alpha
Another important discipleship and outreach 'doorway' at Redeemer is Alpha, to be offered again this fall. It's a great way to brush up on our faith and to introduce others to Christianity in a setting that is fairly 'neutral' and open to inquiry and tough questions. The intro dinner will be Sunday, September 13th, with the course each week to be held in Kenilworth at the Thomases'. If you have never gone through this course, it is highly recommended. "I would love to see everyone at Redeemer engage with this course at some time," remarked Pastor Jay Greener, who has led several Alpha courses in the past. "It is a powerful tool of invitation and formation, and it brings people together in community".
Please pick up an invitation at the Welcome table this Sunday.

Sacred Space
We are working to add a few touches to brighten our church common areas. As we will be renewing these areas, we would love to add some art. If anyone is interested in helping with this project, please contact Melissa Ross (mahross [at] mindspring.com). Also, we have received permission to reupholster the seats of four chairs, and would greatly appreciate someone with experience in this to volunteer their talents (contact Melissa). Thanks!
