From the Rector's Desk

The Long Rwandan Summer

If you've been around Redeemer at all this summer then you know how we have been renewing our relationships in Rwanda. The distant land that birthed tremendous revival early in the 20th century, endured terrible war and genocide a short fifteen years ago and launched a church planting movement in the United States is growing closer to us and coming more sharply into focus. Three of us traveled to east Africa in June, spending time with Sonrise School, St. Michael's and church leadership there. Pictures, stories, and most of all, faces, are now circulating in our life together as a church. In the last few days the Krone family returned from Rwanda where they had connected with Sonrise, Bishop John, and especially Eric, their sponsored child. I'm looking forward to seeing that place again through their eyes. And in the next few weeks work continues on our film images of our earlier trip, even as a team pulls together another exciting and important benefit banquet for Sonrise School in October. We have been walking together for over ten years with our brothers and sisters in Rwanda—especially this summer.

Breakthrough Now that cherished relationship is about to deepen: Matthew Andris, one of our Redeemer leaders, has accepted an invitation to serve a one-year fellowship with International Justice Mission in Kigali, Rwanda's capitol city. A lawyer who has practiced in Chicago for the last nine years, Matthew will be helping those separated from their land and other property to find just resolution. In addition, Matthew has agreed to serve as our first Missioner for Rwanda, representing Church of the Redeemer in an official capacity in Rwanda as we discern how God might be calling us to strengthen and clarify our work in the country, and our relationships with the Anglican Church of Rwanda, St. Michael's and Sonrise School. Matthew's primary work will be for IJM, but as he has time and opportunity, he will be available to represent our church at provincial, governmental and civic meetings, consultations, etc., facilitating communications between our work there and our church here. This is a unique opportunity that God has placed before us, and I'm very excited about what might develop that we cannot now even imagine. Our Vestry concurs, and has decided to send some monthly support to Matthew over the next year, especially as he is stepping out in faith, supporting himself financially during this fellowship.

So our Rwandan summer is about to be extended, and I ask for your prayers. Pray for Matthew, for the many good works being carried out in the Lord's name in Rwanda, and for Redeemer, that we will know how to best partner with what God is doing there, in humility and faithfulness.

Matthew Andris' last Sunday with us is September 20th, and he'll be sharing some personal insights into the next year then, even as we anoint and send him out.

Amahoro (Peace),

Jay

BackPack Sunday

Back to School Our church has many students and teachers, and with school just around the corner we want to bless those whose lives are connected with learning in its many facets. This Sunday will be "Backpack Sunday" at Redeemer, as a time of consecrating and blessing those who study and those who teach, from pre-school through adult education. Bring your backpack (or whatever represents that learning enterprise for you) and we'll bless them and you as school begins. You may want to invite other students and teachers who don't have a church home to participate, so that they can also feel supported in their important work.

COR@9

St. Matthew Beginning September 6th our whole community will have opportunity to grow together in an extended study of the Life of Jesus, as we encounter him in the Gospel of Matthew. Outstanding teacher Dana Harris will lead a team of teachers as we walk through this fascinating story each week at 9am. The class begins in September and will run through the school year and represents a significant discipleship opportunity at Redeemer.

Invite a friend and plan to walk with us. Child-care and activities for all ages will be provided during that time.

Alpha

Alpha is a growing and vital part of our outreach through Church of the Redeemer. We have offered several Alpha opportunities over the last year, and we hope to continue to call people to life in Jesus through Alpha. This fall our Alpha course will be hosted by the Thomas family in Kenilworth, and will begin with an introductory dinner on Sunday evening, September 13th. Please pick up an invitation at the welcome table as you reach out to those who would find encouragement and hope as they encounter faith through Alpha. The course is also a great discipleship series for those who are already Christians but would like to know more about the foundations of our faith.

For more information please contact Ricki Rosengren, rickirosie at sbcglobal.net
